A week-long workshop hosted by photographers from the legendary Magnum agency is up for grabs for two people this summer.

The event, from 14-20 June, will be led by Magnum photographers Chris Steele-Perkins and Simon Wheatley whose London-based studio will host the workshops.

Worth £750 each, the course will involve participants producing an ‘individual project under the same structure as professional assignments’, according to Magnum.

The prize is aimed at advanced photographers В– both amateur and professional В– adds Calumet Photographic, which is sponsoring the competition.

Entries must be submitted online and consist of a maximum of 12 images that reflect ‘the visual identity of the individual’.

Commenting on the Magnum Workshop East London event, a Magnum spokesman said: ‘This will be an exciting opportunity to build a body of work focusing on the topical regeneration of East London.

‘Successful candidates will spend the week developing their skills, ideas and visual language to pursue documentary projects that fall under the framework of В“The New East EndВ” В– a part of London undergoing rapid and profound transformation.’

The spokesman added: ‘The process of editing and criticising the work produced will be a principal part of the learning process and conducted on a daily basis by the Magnum photographers and all participants.’

During the week, participants will also benefit from a lecture by US-based Magnum photographer Eli Reed.

The work will result in an exhibition to be held at the Calumet Gallery in Euston.

The closing date for submissions is 2 May.

Trusted Reviews has posted their review of the Casio Exilim EX-S10 where they write - ‘As a small snapshooter the Casio may not suit everyone, even though it offers something for everyone. The handling is down to taste and personal physiology, so we can’t expect the perfect camera, but the small form is quite fiddly. In terms of images the camera is also hit and miss, with reasonable but not great results. A stand out feature is the dynamic range but other than that the camera produces too many blurred, noisy and distorted images. Most snappers won’t notice, but there are so many cameras available that are better that it would be a shame to miss out just through ignorance.’

Adobe Photoshop Express Beta

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Adobe has announced the launch of an online photo storage and manipulation tool. The public beta of Photoshop Express marks the arrival on the internet of the probably the world’s most recognizable image processing brand name. Photoshop Express allows users to non-destructively edit and enhance their images, which can be pulled and pushed to and from popular websites such as Facebook. Updated: Adobe has issued a statement about some of the application’s fine print that was causing consternation.

The site’s terms and conditons, which appear to grant Adobe the right to re-use and license, potentially for profit, the images uploaded to public areas of the site, have caused concern amongst potential users. Adobe has now issued the following statement on its Photoshop Express forums:

"Statement for Terms of Service Issues:
We’ve heard your concerns about the terms of service for Photoshop Express beta. We reviewed the terms in context of your comments - and we agree that it currently implies things we would never do with the content. Therefore, our legal team is making it a priority to post revised terms that are more appropriate for Photoshop Express users. We will alert you once we have posted new terms.

Thank you for your feedback on Photoshop Express beta and we appreciate your input.

-Adobe Photoshop Express Team"

Press release:

Adobe Launches Photoshop Express Public Beta

Free Online Software Brings Photoshop Technology to Anyone Taking Digital Photos

SAN JOSE, Calif. — March 27, 2008 — Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced Adobe® Photoshop® Express public beta, a free Rich Internet Application (RIA) available to anyone who wants to store, sort and show off digital photos with eye-catching effects. During the public beta period, Adobe will solicit Photoshop Express user feedback on product features and functionality, which will continue to evolve over time. As the newest addition to the Photoshop family line, Photoshop Express has taken much of Adobe’s best image editing technology and made it simple and accessible to a new online audience. Photoshop Express allows users to store up to 2 gigabytes of images online for free, make edits to their photos, and share them online in creative ways, including downloading and uploading photos from popular social networking sites like Facebook.

“Photoshop is trusted technology that has changed the visual landscape of our world. Now, Photoshop Express allows anyone who snaps a digital photo to easily achieve the high-impact results for which Adobe is known,” said Doug Mack, vice president of Consumer and Hosted Solutions at Adobe. “Photoshop Express is a convenient, single destination where you can store, edit and share photos whether you’re at home, school or on the road.”

Simple, Fun and Accessible

With Photoshop Express, digital photos can be uploaded and sorted anytime, edited non-destructively to always preserve the original image, and shared from anywhere, on any Web browser. In a few easy clicks, Photoshop Express empowers anyone to make standard edits, such as removing blemishes and red-eye, converting to black and white, cropping and resizing, and much more.

No experience is required to add special effects that will impress friends and family. In keeping with its one-click approach, Photoshop Express offers tricks like Pop Color which selects an object in an image, mutes the background color of the photo and allows the user to swap the object’s color so it jumps off the page. Sketch effects help photos look like drawings and the Distort feature allows you to distort facial features or objects within the images for a comical or artistic effect. Even users with limited photo editing knowledge can simply select what looks best from a line-up of sample photos with visual hints showing different variations of the added effect.

Photoshop Express offers a variety of creative sharing options, including uploading and showing off photos and slideshows in your own online “Gallery” hosted by Adobe, or conveniently embedding or linking photos to social networking sites and personal blogs without having to leave the application. Slideshows never looked better with animation that makes photos float and fly across the screen, allowing for viewer interactivity and unique presentation styles.

Adobe Photoshop Family

Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended are at the heart of the Photoshop family, joined by solutions for users at every level who want to bring out the best in their digital images. Photoshop Lightroom™ addresses the workflow needs of professional and serious amateur photographers. Photoshop Elements provides exciting tools and sharing options for photo hobbyists.

Photoshop Express is the latest step Adobe is taking to leverage the advanced technology that underpins its award-winning creative products and deliver it to new online communities. In early 2007, Adobe also announced the availability of Adobe® Premiere® Express, an online video editing and mash-up tool on partner sites such as MTV and Photobucket. Adobe Premiere Express leverages the functionality found in Premiere Elements, a fully-featured desktop video editing program.

Free and Available Now

Adobe Photoshop Express beta is available now for free via any Web browser at http://www.photoshop.com/express. Photoshop Express was created with Flex, Adobe’s free, open source framework for building RIAs. Flex applications provide a consistent, rich user experience across operating systems and all major browsers, including Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari and others. An Internet connection and an up-to-date Flash® Player 9 are all that are required to experience Adobe Photoshop Express. In its early phases, Photoshop Express is available to US residents-only in English. Users may experience slow performance if accessed outside of the US. Future plans include availability in other languages and countries.

The European Union (EU) is encouraging photographers to take part in a street photography competition that, under strict rules, requires permission from all people being photographed.

Launching its ‘Cultures on my street’ campaign today, organisers state: ‘All European residents, regardless of age or origins, are invited to participate. It’s as easy as grabbing your camera and stepping outside the front door.’

However, a close look at the rules reveals that participants ‘must prove’ that all individuals depicted in the submitted photos have agreed for their image to be used and that they ‘posed voluntarily’.

Subjects pictured must sign a model release form (pictured), giving permission for the European Union to make free use of their image.

The competition forms part of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008.

Subjects can represent themes such as education, religion, science, the arts, culture, minority groups and youth.

Photo enthusiast John Kelly, who was stopped by police while taking pictures in Blackpool last month, believes the rules will lead to ‘contrived’ pictures and that photographers will have problems getting permission from subjects. ‘I would find it difficult myself,’ he told us, questioning when is the right time to ask such permission for the purposes of a natural photograph.

Challenged over the rules, a competition spokesman told us that the model release rules ‘are not meant to inhibit photographers going about their everyday business’.

He said they are included as a ‘common courtesy’ to ensure people are aware that their image may be used on promotional booklets and on posters across Europe.

The spokesman added that with different laws in each country it would be difficult, logistically, to draw up different rules for each nation.

The contest’s ВЂ15,000 prize pot includes photo equipment and trips to European cities.

Organisers add: ‘Everyone has a story. Now that the borders within Europe are fading, people from an even greater mix of cultures and backgrounds are coming together, mingling their voices in an ever-growing dialogue of their unique stories and experiences.’

The closing date is 30 June and winners will receive their prizes at a ceremony in Brussels, Belgium, in September.

Rules state that entrants must also agree to the subsequent use of their photo by the European Commission in relation to the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008.

Imaging Resource reviews the Nikon Coolpix S700 and writes - “Small, compact, and very capable, the Nikon Coolpix S700 will please many consumers with its good color, exposure, and resolution. The Nikon S700 captures great images under a variety of conditions, thanks to its range of preset Scene modes and useful tools such as D-Lighting and Distortion Control. Face-Priority AF technology helps get the best focus on portraits, even of large groups. The 12.1-megapixel CCD captures excellent resolution and detail in good light an at low ISO, and the 3x optical zoom lens is sharp and clear. High ISOs extend the camera’s low-light shooting capabilities, though strong image noise becomes a factor. Printed results show that ISO 800 is capable of getting a good 5×7. ”
